Landing in a new city can be exciting... and a little overwhelming. New trains, new slang, and not a single friend (yet).
But don’t worry — here’s your cheat sheet to surviving your first week in Sydney like a pro.
🌇 1. Get Your Basics Sorted
Opal card: Your key to buses, trains, ferries — grab one at any 7-Eleven.
Phone plan: Look into prepaid options from Optus, Vodafone or Telstra.
Bank account & SIM card: Try to knock both out on Day 1 if you’re staying long-term.
🗺️ 2. Learn the Neighbourhoods (Real Quick)
CBD = the business center (where you’ll probably get lost once).
Newtown = alternative, artsy, good vegan food.
Bondi & Coogee = beachy and beautiful (but rent is brutal).
Marrickville = great food, culture, and live music.
🫱🫲 3. Make Friends (Faster Than You Think)
Let’s be honest — Sydney can be a bit cliquey. That’s why communities like Aloha exist. Come to one of our events (Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays), and you'll meet locals, internationals, and students just like you — no awkward intros needed.
🍻 4. Embrace the Weird Stuff
Everyone says “How you going?” (don’t panic, just say “good!”)
Avocados are ridiculously expensive.
You’ll learn to love $10 happy hours and 4 PM sunsets in winter.
💬 Final Tip:
You don’t need to “figure it all out” in week one.Just show up, stay curious, and say yes to one event. You’ll thank yourself later.
